Blow Day

Blow Day

It has been a whirlwind of fishing and just being busy so it has taken me a minute to get some blogs up. First up we had the D&R Sports Grand Traverse Bay event that was cancelled. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do to control the weather and gusts to 40 with small craft advisories forced a cancellation of the event.

Practice was eventful at least and anytime I get to fish the bay and stay with the Wheat’s it is a good trip. I’d been watching the weather carefully prior to practice and when big winds are forecasted you’ve got to practice for it. That is the only thing I don’t like about cancellations is often times you can practice for what the weather is going to give you. Because of the wind direction in this event that was certainly a possibility.

We did find out early on the day before the tournament that the event was cancelled which was much appreciated. It meant we could just go fishing but it also limited the amount of exploring we would end up doing. We did a little bit of everything during practice and it wasn’t on fire for us but I would also have bet we were going to catch some nice fish. The one disappointing thing about practice is that the lake trout and cisco weren’t really firing for us. Water temps had them deeper and scattered it seemed. Also the one time we found a pile of cisco it was so calm that they just wouldn’t bite.

We had plans to head home and explore a new fishery or 2 on the way home. However we couldn’t ignore the calm waters on the south end of the bay. We knew the water temps were going to drop but we had to go check some things. It ended up being the only part of the trip where we could drop the Minn Kota Talons and just go to work on them for a long time.

Word is the event may get rescheduled which is fine by me. I’m very fortunate to have to have some good friends who offer me a place to stay (which is much appreciated). We always have a great time and if a rescheduled tournament is an excuse to go back I am good with that!
