Saginaw Bay Pre Big Stack Thoughts

We are back at it this weekend for the Big Stack event on Saginaw Bay. I’ve got no clue what to expect there since I’ve never been. I’ve always wanted to check out the bay and a tournament is the best way to get me to new places. We are launching out of Bayport which looks to be one of the most protected launches and also close to “popular” areas on the Bay.

As always with big water wind is one of my main concerns. We are going at a historically calm time of the year on the Great Lakes but going by the current forecast that won’t be the case this week. That brings the big question of what to do, largemouth? Smallmouth? Will we even get to fish?

I don’t really know how it gets out there but it seems like that bay would let us fish in a confined space unless things got really bad. I’ve been keeping a watchful eye on the forecast and things aren’t looking great. Decisions during practice and the tournament will definitely be made tougher by what is going to transpire in the next few days. My first practice day is Thursday and unlike the Black Lake tournament I need to use my practice wisely.

Leading up to this event I was prepared to go all in on smallmouth unless I really couldn’t get on anything. However risky runs in rough water isn’t really my thing and it may not even be possible come Sunday. We may be switching to largemouth and I am totally ok with that. It definitely works in my favor if the smallmouth are largely inaccessible in this event. It’s going to be a lot easier for me to locate a couple largemouth bites on the bay vs idling around unfamiliar water looking for brown bass.

I’m keeping my goals simple for this one, practice smart, don’t break anything, and catch as much as you can on Sunday. If I could somehow come out of here with a check I would be thrilled!
