Power Tubing

It seems most often we associate throwing a tube with spinning tackle. Especially when it comes to smallmouth as that seems to be the Great Lakes region norm. I’ll subscribe to some tubing with 7’6” spinning tackle once in awhile too. However when they are eating I’m much more likely to go power tubing with heavy baitcast gear.

I’ll rig up a 7’3” heavy Rush from Favorite Fishing and spool it with 15lb P-Line Tactical. I’ve got some legit muscle and sensitivity with this setup! I’ll add a 3/8 or 1/2 ounce 2k jigs fat boy tube and whatever tubes I have laying around and go to work. Usually when I’m using this setup I’m wanting to keep bottom contact with the tube at all times and I really prefer that style and size of tube head for bottom contact.

Dragging and making short scoots is how I really like to fish the tube especially when the water is cold. The bites are often just weight but they will absolutely slack line it at times too. The must fun part is hammering them on the hookset and controlling the fish all the way back to the boat. There isn’t a whole lot of drag peeling going on with the stout line. Anything 4.25 pounds and under gets boat flipped and then it’s back to fishing quickly.
