Cold Water Cruisers - Lake Trout

“Cold water” species are offshore much of the year (while it is pleasant to cast off the piers) in Lake Michigan as they just can’t handle the warm temps often found nearshore. But fall though spring presents some unique opportunities for those who want to venture out on the pier. You truly never know what you are going to catch as just about anything could be swimming around.

Right now if conditions allow there’s a really good shot at a lake trout on any Lake Michigan pier. In my experience salmon and trout are just about always on the cruise so putting a little time in might be necessary. But the reward is worth it as the lakers I have caught off the pier in winter have always been big ones. Expect a lengthy fight with some runs and some bottom hugging thrown in.

Conventional bass tackle is all you need. I tend to favor blade baits as I feel it is more likely I’ll pick up a bonus walleye or whitefish. But swimbaits fished in the same way by jigging near the bottom are also popular.

Picking the right day is the most important. Factoring in wind, waves, and freezing temps is challenge. Being cautious of ice buildup on the piers is another one. One thing that won’t change is if the fish are around. They’ll be there all winter and who knows what other surprises may be lurking. It is a great way to mix up the ice fishing game or if you are one of those guys who sadly doesn’t ice fish, well it is a great way to do something.
