Random happenings

I feel like I’ve got a lot to catch up on here. There’s been so much going with the baby and just general chaos. I know I made mention of it in the turkey blog. But if you don’t like turkeys you probably didn’t read it. I got a chance to be on the Serious Angler Podcast to talk about science and fishing. Podcasting is always a good time but I really had fun talking to Bailey and Andrew. You can find the episode on the Serious Angler YouTube page or many of the other places they list their podcast

Other than that I’ve gotten some bass fishing in. I got a few trips in before it just went full on spawn. I probably won’t catch another bass that I can’t see until tournaments start at this point. Dave and I took Trevor out for his first smallmouth sight fishing adventure recently and it didn’t take him long to catch on. Not that catching the smallmouth is overly hard but he picked up on all the little tricks to make it even easier. I did get one good prespawn smallmouth trip in with Dave before the warm up. It doesn’t look like we will be doing any fun travel trips this spring just because of how ridiculous gas prices are. So we have been sticking close to home.

I also had a chance to take the kids to my buddy Drew’s private lake for some giant bluegill action. I was hoping to just take Mabel since she’s an expert but June really wanted to go. I wasn’t sure how that was going to go since she’s only 2.5. She was a little unsure of the boat but she caught her very first official fish. She’s partly reeled them in before but this one was all on her own. She’s potty trained and couldn’t hold it while we were out there. She happened to be sitting on my lap so lucky me!

I’ve also been kind of bitten by the salmon bug this spring after the awesome unsalted trip. I tried unsuccessfully to catch one jigging in Lake Michigan. I definitely learned a few things with my Humminbird MEGA Live. I think I can make it happen but I was slow to get on a pod of fish and figure some non vertical stuff out. I watched 2 kings slash at my jig but just didn’t get it. I think it may be a swimbait deal with the live. I will try again but trolling is definitely the way. I did make it out with Trevor and his dad and caught some nice coho’s. I also got to put my first planer board out all by myself so it was fun to learn a few things in the salmon game.

It is time to get serious now and it seems like my window to have fun is gone. Next week when I get out it will be all business probably practicing for the Tom Cook Memorial open. I absolutely hate that it’s on Monday but since we are going to be local this year Trevor and I are going to jump into it. That one has been good to me in the past so we will see how it goes!
